The lawyer of Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh — Ram Jethmalani — on Monday made a dramatic submission in a special Delhi court alleging that the person who actually paid the bribe was not the former general secretary of Samajwadi Party, but senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
Appearing for Singh before special judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal in the cash-for-votes scam case, Jethmalani changed his previous stand and blamed Patel, the political secretary of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Only the last week, he had told the court that the money came from the BJP.
Earlier, the court took up Singh’s regular bail petition. The hearing was on. On September 15, he had been granted interim bail in the case on medical grounds, which lapsed on Monday.
The fate of Singh’s bail plea would depend on the detailed medical report, to be filed by the doctors who have been treating him at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). During his judicial custody, the Tihar Central Jail authorities had shifted Singh to AIIMS on September 12.
Suhail Hindustani faints
Meanwhile, Suhail Hindustani, who appeared in the court during the hearing on the bail pleas of four accused, including him and Singh, collapsed inside the courtroom.
Medical assistance was rushed in and Hindustani was taken to the hospital. He had allegedly acted as a conduit between former BJP MPs — Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahaveer Bhagoda — and Singh.
