Fresh general elections needed: Mamata Banerjee

IANS / Tuesday, October 30, 2012 18:58 IST

Supporting the demands of anti-corruption activists, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said fresh general elections were needed in the country since the government was in “minority”.

“I saw on TV that people from Team Anna said the government had lost its credibility to remain in power and there is a need to go to polls. I fully agree with them,” Banerjee told a press conference here.

“This is a minority government and it is threatening others through CBI and vigilance and enforcement departments,” the Trinamool Congress chief said.

On Monday, former army chief General (retd) V.K. Singh, who had joined the stir led by social activist Anna Hazare, said parliament must be dissolved and fresh elections held.

On Sunday’s reshuffle in the union council of ministers, Banerjee said it was the Congress’s government, not UPA’s. “This is a one-party rule.”

She said Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and AIADMK had refused to join the government despite the Congress’s appeals.

“No party joined the ministry. Is it not no confidence against the government? Enough is enough,” she said.

Trinamool Congress had withdrawn its support to the UPA government over economic reforms in September.

1 Response to Fresh general elections needed: Mamata Banerjee

Mamata is absolutely right that the country ios badly in need of a General Election as the prsent Minority UPA has no right to pass bills that may be brought by Congress as NCP and DMK have no saying in the matters and stick to power as they have lost credibility and know well that in the case of General Election they can’t get any power again.DMK’s position is so miserable that it will have no space in Tamilnadu and Centre in case of elections and hence are hangering with the Congress and keeping quiet on all the loots made by the Congress by simply watching as they too are involved in scams. So SUCH A LOOTING GOVT BY ALL THE PARTIES OF UPA are a nightmare for the people and hence the demand of Mamata can’t be ignored. As Ciongress is not sure of coming to power again they won’t prefer an early General Election and so its main allies NCP and DMK and want to prolong the time.Even in case of a No Confidence motion SP,BSP can’t go against Congress as CBI casesarehanging over them. That is what Mamata has described. If this situation continues then the people will have no other alternative but to take the law into thir hands and will create a civil war like position. Not only CBI etc even the judiciary has been bought by Congress and can’t be depended on.Even the SC is taking side with Congress. So the bal is in the court of the people and unless there is a mass movement to throw this corrupt UPA Govt there won’t be any relief for the people.
who can’t wait for another 16months to allow the Congress to loot as much as possible
and leave the country bankrupt.Hence an urgent need for the General Elections by February 2013 at the latest. No other way.In this Anna and Gen Singjh have taken the right stand.
