The story of 27 Mandirs-I

When Francois Gautier recently organised an exhibition at Lalit Kala Academy Hall in Chennai to bring out the atrocities of Aurangazeb (1658-1707) which he let loose against the Hindus of India by destroying and desecrating their ancient temples, there were protests from some extremist Muslim elements, egged on by some remnants of the feudal Muslim elements of the 18th century

The Tamilnadu police, for inexplicable reasons, ran riot and let loose violence against the peaceful organisers of the exhibition, not in an open ground but inside a public hall of the Lalit Kala Academy.

In these columns I had written a series of articles giving historic, literary, epigraphic, artistic and architectural evidence to bring out the fact that Aurangazeb took special delight in destroying Hindu temples and structures.

The famous historian Will Durant (1885-1981) wrote graphically about Islamic jihad in Indian history. He wrote: `The Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in human history.’ A similar picture of Islamic havoc in India can be seen in the words of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902): `When the Muslims first came to India, there were according to their historical records, 60 crores of Hindus. This calculation suffers from underestimation rather than exaggeration; for lots of people perished through persecution of the Muslims….But today the same Hindus have dwindled to 20 crores’. (Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, Volume V, pp 233).

I am citing another example from the works of Swami Vivekananda. In his famous lecture at the Shakespeare Club in California, USA, on 3 February 1900, he declared: `Mohammedans are the crudest and the most sectarian. Their watchword is: `There is one God, and Mohammed is the Prophet’. Everything beyond that not only is bad, but also must be destroyed forthwith; at a moment’s notice every man or woman who does not believe in that must be killed; everything that does not belong to this worship must immediately be broken; every book that teaches us anything else must be burnt. From the Pacific to the Atlantic, for 500 years blood ran all over the world. That is Mohammedanism.’ (Complete Works Volume IV, PP 126)

Ever since the days of Mahatma Gandhi, the Maulana of Muslim appeasement from the days of Kilafat Movement in 1920-21 and the father (Durathma of Hindu genocide from the days of Moplah Rebellion in 1921 till today, it has always been the general practice of politicians and the Marxist breed of historians to sanitise the vitriolic annals of Islam’s brutal sway in India. Almost all barbaric acts of jihad have been hushed up and removed from academic texts and reference books. This truth-suppressing attitude at certain intellectual levels got crystallised into an Article of Faith and State Policy under the government of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru from 1947 to 1964.

Jawaharlal Nehru University and Aligarh Muslim University, inspired by Islamic zeal which only the Marxists can possess and promote, sought to perpetrate myths of pre-colonial communal harmony and composite culture. What have the people in bonded intellectual labour like Romila Thapar, Ifran Habib, Bipin Chandra etc. etc. who were, ensconced in cushy academic positions like the Indian Council of Historic Research (ICHR) till recently, not done to please their political bosses of the Nehruvian establishment! They have declared many tyrannical and perverted Muslim rulers as `secular’ and `benevolent’ perhaps more egalitarian than the Hindu rulers.

Taking note of this deliberate and politically motivated perversion of history, Dr R C Majumdar, the doyen of our country’s history, observed as follows: `It is very sad that the spirit of perverting history to suit political views is no longer confined to the politicians, but has definitely spread even among the professional historians….A history written under the auspices of the Indian National Congress brazenly sought to repudiate the charge that the Muslim rulers broke the Hindu temples, and asserted that they were the most tolerant in matters of religion.’

Unfortunately, the Hindus who suffered the Islamic onslaught in medieval times had written no history of what they went through. It was the medieval Muslim historians who had preserved with meticulous care and great glee the records of what the `ghazis’ had done to the `kafirs’ again and again.

Muslim regimes, throughout the world have an unparalleled record of terrorism and torture, murder and mayhem described in gory details by contemporary Muslim chroniclers themselves. Subjecting all non-Muslims to horrendous atrocities, plundering their wealth, abducting and raping their women and destroying the places of worship have all been considered as sacred duties of every Muslim in Islamic theology and practice.

Sir Jadunath Sarkar (1870-1958) in his magnum opus, A History of Aurangzeb in five volumes (1912-24) and Shivaji and his Times (1919 wrote about the history of the seventeenth century.

While A History of Aurangzeb traced the fall of the Mughal Empire, Shivaji and his Times traced the rise of the Marathas under a heroic leader. He said, `A creed, whose followers are taught to regard robbery and murder as a religious duty, is incompatible with the progress of mankind….Muslim polity formed the faithful into a body with no other profession than war…. War is the only trade they have a natural aptitude for and peace means to them unemployment and downfall.'(A History of Aurangazeb, Third Edition, PP 168 and 169).

Two months back, I visited the Qutab Minar in Delhi. I had carried along with me a magnificent book titled Hindu Masjids by Prafull Goradia. The facts given in this story are based on this book. Most of the tourists who visit Qutab Minar will only talk about its beauty and the grace of Qutbuddin Aibak (1204-1210) who built it. Next to the Minar, we have the Quwwatul Islam Mosque. This Masjid was named after its builder, Qutbuddin Aibak, as Quwwatul Islam, which translated into English, means the Might of Islam. Prafull Goradia rightly puts it: `The name itself is arrogant; for a place of worship it is even more so’.

Ibn Batuta (1304-1377) who visited India in the 14th century and wrote a historic travelogue was categorical about the fact that the Quwwatul Islam Mosque was built by Qutubddin Aibak after destroying 27 Hindu temples. In his travel account he wrote: `On the sight of this mosque, there was a Butkhana, a house of Hindu idols. After the conquest of Delhi, it was turned into a mosque by Qutubddin Aibak.’

Even today no one can fail to notice the image of Ganesh on the rear plinth of the mosque.

Qutab Minar is located in Mehrauli. The desecration of Mehrauli was initiated by Mohamed Ghaury soon after the second Battle of Tarain in 1192 AD. It was at this battle that Mohamed Ghaury defeated and killed Prithviraj Chauhan. This was followed by the desecration/destruction of the Hindu temple at the site. There is no record or mention anywhere that the idol of the presiding deity of the Mandir was removed and handed over to the priest for taking away to another temple. In fact, in many cases, there are references to how the idol was destroyed and its broken pieces were buried under the entrance of the mosque, so that they would be repeatedly and routinely stepped upon by those who came visiting for their IBADAT.

Most of the tourists do not visit the Quwwatul Islam Mosque today. Nor do they care to know anything about the sad story that lies behind the birth of this mosque. The story of this mosque is told on the tablet displayed on the spot by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It is a story of how 27 temples were desecrated and how their rubble was used to build a mosque in their place.

It was put to announce to the local populace that the Hindu raja was gone and the Islamic sultan had taken over.

(To be contd…)
